Responsibilities

* Participate in appropriate educational programs relating to clinical practice and/or communication and continuing education required to maintain necessary licensures and certifications.

* Is responsible for performing competencies, assigned by the Leadership Team, pertaining to sterilization process and high level disinfection no less than every 3 years
* Maintain confidentiality of all patients.
* Comply with all Center policies, procedures, code of conduct and compliance program.
* Participate in quarterly fire and disaster drills.
* Attend Center meetings as applicable and participate in orientation and staff development programs.
* Assume the responsibility for assurance of patient safety during the period of enforced dependency created intra-operatively.
* Comply with AAMI and AORN Standards to perform appropriate sterilization of instruments.
* Perform other duties as assigned.

* Have needed equipment and supplies available as required for surgical procedures.

Clinical-OR
* Assist Circulating Nurse in opening sterile supplies and prepare for each operative procedure.
* Scrub, gown, and glove in accordance with Center policy.
* Prepare back table, instruments and supplies according to procedure care and Center policy.
* Assist surgeon as scrub technician according to standards.
* Maintain correct count of needles and sponges with Circulating Nurse.
* Assist in application of dressing.
* Assist with emergency procedures as required.
* Assist in maintenance of specimens per surgeon request and Center policy.

Sterile Processing Technician
* Demonstrates effective leadership skills by creating a positive work environment, providing appropriate feedback and support and maintains knowledge of current central processing trends.
* Performs decontamination, preparation, sterilization and distribution of surgical instruments and medical equipment throughout the surgery center, utilizing infection control and safety practices during all phases of the process.
* Assembles, packages, and prepares instrument sets and other re-usable items. Performs sterilization tasks according to policies including Steam, Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) and Peracetic Acid.
* Competently operates and monitors department equipment according to safe practices.
* Maintain records of sterilization procedures, sterilized items, equipment maintenance, and supplies.
* Reports any issues or problems with sterilization equipment to the materials manager or DON.

Infection Control
* Minimize risk of nosocomial infection by adhering to infection control policies and practice guidelines.
* Maintain aseptic techniques at all times.
* Decontaminate all equipment, instruments and supplies needed for each procedure per Center policy and manufacturer's guidelines or instructions for use.
* Clean all instruments and equipment in accordance with recognized standards of practice.
* Assemble instrument sets accurately.
* Load sterilizer according to Center policy and manufacturer guidelines or instructions for use.
* Maintain knowledge of operation of all sterilization equipment.
* Know location of all equipment and supplies.


Qualifications

  • High School graduate or GED
  • Graduate of an accredited school of surgical technology or Military training that qualifies individual to sit the certification exam
  • Current BLS certification
  • One year prior experience required
  • CBSPD certification or equivalent for Sterile Instrument Processing. Must complete certification process no more than 12 months after date of hire.
